Construction Supplies
Keeping a project going smoothly makes the whole process
of building run effectively. Organization is key. Keeping a schedule
and making lists and plans will put the information in an understandable
format.
From a time line to a construction supplies list, every
detail counts and needs to be laid out. Knowing what you need at certain
phases of construction can be supplied ahead of time to prevent unnecessary
trips to stores which cause a break in momentum. Keeping employees on
task is critical.
From the very beginning of the job safety is a major concern.
Personal protective equipment and work site safety items need to be
available from day one. Safety equipment includes:
•Helmets
•Lighting
•Safety goggles/ glasses
•Gloves
•Steel-toed footwear
•Safety cables
•First aid kit
Each stage in the project has individual needs and there
are many stages to consider:
•Foundation
•Framing
•Dry walling
•Insulation
•Roofing
•Flooring
•Electrical
•Plumbing
•Painting and exterior surfaces
With so many processes going on it is critical to stay
organized. Having one person in charge of each area prepare a list is
a good start. Skilled employees will know what is needed for a project
right away. Construction supplies can be purchased ahead of time so
there is no delay moving from one project to the next. There are some
things that will be needed in general on most tasks. These items need
to be purchased first along with the safety equipment:
•Tools- hammers, wrenches, nail guns and staplers
•Power tools- drills, saws, routers, sanders
•Layout devices- levels, compasses, stud finders, and calculators
•Nuts, bolts, screw, and other fasteners
•Generators- to supply power to job site at all times
•Building materials- drywall, plywood, and other lumber
Having the basics at hand at all times will keep things
simple. Sometimes a project will require more attention than others
so taking the focus off what it needed is essential.
Large scale projects are the ultimate test in multi-tasking.
Identifying problem areas and trouble spots ahead of time will help
one stay prepared. Education materials are great for this. Manuals and
How-to books will provide important information and many even come with
a list of construction supplies needed. Having a general knowledge of
all the areas of construction will make for an invaluable project manager.
Books on the basics of plumbing, electrical, roofing, framing and dry
walling will also be useful in case a problem is encountered. These
books usually have a trouble shooting section which may save money by
preventing the need to bring expensive experts in.
Of course there is no substitute for well-trained employees.
It is the project manager’s job to make sure everyone knows the
plan. The manager will work with the construction engineer and the project
architect to ensure everyone is on the same page. Keeping lists and
plans organized is vital, as well as having your construction supplies
in advance. Keeping track of it all is well worth it and will lead to
successful completion of any project.
